Beginners Guide to Cycling

Here’s your ultimate beginners guide to Soul Cycle, or cycling classes in general. When I first started my fitness journey I found high energy, packed workout classes like Soul intimidating as hell, but over time I’ve learned to love it. If you’re looking to build your endurance, kick start your weight loss, or just have a great time – cycling is for you! Read on for some tips on how to rock you first class! You’re well on your way to a happier and healthier you.

Tip #1 – Prepare for class a couple hours before with a nutritious meal/snack and at least one glass of water. You’re going to sweat A LOT, so be sure to get in that H2O.  If you don’t eat a substantial meal or snack 2 hours before the class, you increase your risk of fatigue or injury. Plus you’ll be hungry, which is no fun. Let’s squash the crash diet, no eating thing.

Tip #2 – Wear lightweight supportive workout gear. Lightweight, because, once again, you’re going to sweat and you want a fabric that will whisk away moisture so you’re comfortable throughout the 45-60 minute class. I say supportive, because there’s nothing worse than having your leggings roll down or your sports brad move around during an intense class. I love Lululemon and Gym Shark!

Tip #3 – Arrive at the studio 30-45 minutes before your first class. This is so you can sign a waiver and then have plenty of time to lock your stuff in a locker and set up your bike in the actual studio.

Tip #6 – Bring a medium sized water bottle. Swell’s work great, because they hold enough water to last you through the entire class, but also, they’re slim enough to fit comfortably in the cup holders on your bike.

Tip #5 – Rent shoes at the location when signing in. I know it sounds gross, but they clean and sanitize them regularly. Tell them your average shoes size and they’ll give you the best fit! These are rented for a small fee, which I justify because buying them would be $200+.

Tip #6 – Tell an employee it’s your first ride and ask for help setting up your bike. This will be crucial to find the right height for the handles and seat, etc. Each cycling studio is unique, so even if you think you know your settings, I recommend you ask someone to help you out. You want to be comfortable!

Tip #7 – Take a breath and relax, no one is judging you before, during, or after class. We’re all just there to work it out and have fun. Enjoy and take everything at your own pace!

Tip #8 – Don’t sweat the choreography on your first time, just ride to the beat and you’ll be great! I always find it most useful to look at the instructor or the people in the front row to get a gauge on movements.

Tip #9 – If you didn’t know, there’s an arm routine halfway through. So grab lighter dumbbells to put under your bike seat, if they’re not already there.  I find 2-3 pound weights are my favorite to endure the whole sequence.

Tip #10 – When you’re done with class make sure to follow along with the short stretching routine and follow it up with anything additional you feel like you need. The last thing you want, is to have extreme soreness the next day, when it could have been avoided.

Tip #11 – When you get home make sure that you continue to drink water, but also consider eating something protein rich to sustain your energy, especially in the morning.

Health and fitness are such personal things, so this is just what works for me. I do still want to thank you for following along, and I truly do hope that this helps you on your own wellness journey. Let’s Ride!!
